How Is HPV Cleared From the Body?
For the HPV virus to be eliminated from the body, it is critically important for the immune system to be strong. The virus does not enter the bloodstream; it mostly stays localized in the epithelial cells. For this reason, rather than a strong systemic immune response, it is mostly regional (local) immune mechanisms that come into play.
When the immune system works strongly enough, the virus is suppressed and over time becomes clinically undetectable.
Why Does HPV Become Persistent in Some People?
Situations in which the immune system is weak can make it harder for the virus to be cleared. Smoking, chronic stress, immunosuppression, certain systemic diseases and inadequate nutrition can negatively affect the immune response.
HPV types that cannot be cleared from the body, especially high-risk types, can lead to cellular changes and precancerous lesions over the years.
Does HPV Disappear Completely?
Yes, HPV can disappear completely. In most individuals, HPV is suppressed by the immune system and becomes clinically negative. However, in some cases the virus can persist at a low level in the cells and can reactivate when immunity declines.
For this reason, regular follow-up and smear and HPV DNA tests are important in individuals with HPV positivity.
What Is Important During the HPV Healing Process?
- Not smoking
- A lifestyle that supports the immune system
- Regular gynaecological check-ups
- Treatment of warts with an appropriate method when necessary
The vast majority of HPV infections are brought under control by the immune system. Persistent infections, on the other hand, require regular follow-up.
