HPV Treatment with Laser (Genital Wart Treatment)
Vaporizing HPV-related wart tissue with a fractional carbon dioxide laser is a highly effective and successful method with a low recurrence rate. It makes use of the controlled vaporizing effect of laser beams on the wart tissue.
- The recurrence rate is low.
- The chance of scarring and colour change is very low.
- General anaesthesia can be applied for widespread lesions.
Its disadvantage is that, because of the high cost of the device, it is not available at every centre.
HPV Treatment with Electrocautery (Wart Burning)
Electrocauterization is based on the principle of destroying the wart by burning it with electric current. It is particularly effective for small lesions on the external genital area, the base of the penis and around the anus.
- Local or general anaesthesia may be required.
- Post-procedure pain may be more pronounced.
- The likelihood of forming scar tissue is higher than with laser.
HPV Treatment with Radiofrequency
Radiofrequency (radiosurgery) destroys the wart tissue by vaporizing it with radio waves. It can be used safely on any part of the body.
- The likelihood of scar formation is low.
- Local or general anaesthesia can be applied.
- Post-procedure pain can be controlled.
HPV Treatment with Cryotherapy (Wart Freezing)
Cryotherapy is based on the principle of freezing the wart with liquid nitrogen. After freezing, the wart tissue becomes necrotic.
- More than one session may be required.
- Blistering, ulceration and loss of colour may occur.
- It can be applied safely during pregnancy.
HPV Treatment with Medication
Topical medications and chemical agents work by stimulating the immune system or by destroying the wart. However, their success rates can be variable compared to energy-based methods and may require long-term use.
